Dr. MUNYAKAZI : Everyone has the responsibility to fight Gender Based Violence in schools

Kigali, 10th December 2019. Speaking at a consultative meeting that gathered Gender Monitoring Office, Inspectors of Education and different stakeholders in the Education sector in Rwanda, the Minister of State in Charge of Primary and Secondary Education Dr. Isaac MUNYAKAZI said that it is everyone’s role to fight and denounce the Gender Based Violence in schools.

In her welcoming remarks, the Chief Gender Monitor Mrs Rose Rwabuhihi said: “We commend the progress that Rwanda has made in education by ensuring equal rights and opportunities for boys and girls”

In his opening remarks, the Minister of |State in Charge of Primary and Secondary Education Dr. Isaac MUNYAKAZI said “The Ministry has put in place mechanisms to fight Gender Based Violence in schools, but it is unfortunate that we can still hear of GBV cases in different schools, it is therefore everyone’s role to fight this scourge”. He further added that GBV is a barrier to Education quality and that the he hopes the meeting will come up with strategies to ensure Rwandan education evolves in a GBV free environment.

This one-day meeting was organized by the Ministry of Education and the Gender Monitoring Office to discuss with the Inspectors of Education and other key stakeholders on the upcoming   assessment of GBV prevention and response mechanisms in Rwandan Secondary Schools.  The GMO planned assessment is scheduled to take place in January 2020 and will be used by policy makers and promote a violence free environment in schools.
