MINEDUc and the World Bank discuss basic education in Rwanda
KIGALI , Monday June 11, 2018: The Ministry of Education through Rwanda Education Board today convened a meeting with the World Bank, to discuss Basic Education in Rwanda. The discussions focused on priorities for schooling and learning according to a study conducted by the World Bank in Sub-Saharan African Countries.
According to Mrs Jee-Peng Tan , Consultant at the World Bank, Rwanda is among sub- saharan countries that have heavily invested in quality basic education. "After the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, the country put in place good policies and the enrolment rate in basic education is commendable " she said.
She further remarked that according to the comparative study made by the World Bank in Sub Saharan Africa countries, basic education is still facing challenges. Rwanda was requested to put more efforts in boosting school leadership, multiply teachers' trainings , minimize repetition rates .
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Samuel Mulindwa said that the recommendations given by the World bank will be implemented very easily because some of them have been captured as priorities in the Education Sector Strategic Plan 2018/19 - 2023/24.
The Minister of State in Charge of primary and Secondary Education Dr. Isaac Munyakazi welcomed the comparative study and said that it will help the Ministry to fill the gaps that are in the rwandan basic education system.
Dr. Irenée NDAYAMBAJE , teh Director General of the Rwanda Education Board said that Rwanda is doing everything possible to improve the basic education quality. " In 2015, the Ministry of Education , inspired by the country’s economic aspirations, launched a new competence-based curriculum for pre-primary , primary and secondary to ensure that students are equipped with hands-on skills and analytical spirit.He later stressed that there several other initiatives that are always implemented to improve the basic education .
The Minister of Education Dr. Eugene Mutimura lauded the World Bank for their study in basic education which is an opportunity for Rwanda to learn from other Sub-Saharan African Countries . " Being aware that quality education is a strong pillar to the development of our country , we have started a quarterly Awareness Campaign to find out the barriers to the achievement of the education quality we want and ways to overcome them". the Minister of Education said .
