Minister Valentine meets with the IMF Executive Director Representing Rwanda

Kigali, 2nd September 2021: The Minister of Education Dr. Valentine UWAMARIYA held a virtual meeting with the IMF Executive Director representing Rwanda Mr. Aivo H Andrianarivelo and briefed him on the impact of covid-19 on Rwanda's education sector and how Rwanda has overcome the challenges.

Speaking to the International Monitory Fund (IMF) Executive Director, the Minister of Education also highlighted Rwanda’s strategy on enhancing human capital and ensuring adequacy of education and training for labour market as well as regional and international universities operating in Rwanda.

The Minister noted that Rwanda conducted and achieved immense improvements in its Human Capital Development, with a net enrolment rate of 98.5 % in primary education.

She added that, recently Rwanda completed an immense effort of increasing access and phasing out of double shifting in schools through construction of over 22,500 classrooms under the Governments partnership with the World Bank.

With regards to higher education institutions, the Minister of Education Dr Valentine Uwamariya further informed that, Rwanda managed to attract some of the top international education institutions, and these include African Leadership University, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Global Health and Equity. ‘’We have also achieved a strong alignment and better oversight for our higher-level TVET institutions under the umbrella of Rwanda Polytechnique. Much more remains to be done to ensure that all Rwandan children and youth complete the basic education cycle as well as improving the quality of education provided within our institutions’’ the Minister said.

The IMF Executive Director representing Rwanda Mr. Aivo H Andrianarivelo commended Rwanda’s efforts particularly in handling impacts of covid-19 on education sector and strategies that are in place that target improving of the HCI prioritization of action and interventions.
