Primary, Secondary schools and Higher Learning Institutions closed due to COVID 19

As the Ministry of Education had earlier stated in the official announcement, the first round of students started going home on Sunday, March 15, 2020 beginning with the students who study in Southern Province and Kigali city schools while students from Northern, Eastern, and Western provinces started departing on Monday March 16. The Rwandan government through the Ministry of Education provided free transport facilities for all students in boarding schools.

The students converged at Kigali Stadium located in Nyamirambo for medical screening, washing hands as well as taking soft drinks while they were waiting to board other buses that took them to their respective destinations. .

Despite the challenge of insufficient buses compared to the number of students that were supposed to go home on the first two days of the program, The Minister of Education Dr Valentine UWAMARIYA gave assurance to parents that the Ministry would do whatever it takes to make sure that all students get home safe as soon as possible. .

“We thank all stakeholders in this activity of taking students home, and we hope that we will also continue working together the following day. We had a problem of buses today and all students from southern province schools were not able to get home, but we assure parents that based on the measures we have taken, the remaining students will depart tomorrow” Dr Uwamariya stated. .

The ministry of Education made the activity possible in partnership with its agencies such as Rwanda Education Board, Workforce Development Authority, Rwanda Polytechnic and other different stakeholders like the Ministry of local Governance, City of Kigali, Rwanda Utility and Regulatory Authority, the Ministry of Infrastructure, the Ministry of Health, Rwanda Biomedical Center, the Ministry of Defense, Rwanda National Police and many most of local Transportation Companies. .
