Rwanda joins the rest of the world in celebrating the International Teachers’ Day
Kigali- On 5th October 2019, Rwanda joined the world in celebrating the International Teachers’ Day under the UNESCO theme: “Young Teachers: The Future of the Profession.” The day was marked in Rwanda by events held across the country, with awards presented to best performing teachers in recognition of their efforts in improving quality practical education.
Rwanda has made great achievements in improving education, particularly to ensure every child has a right to go to school. Teachers are the key to ensuring that when that child goes to school, they receive a high quality education that empowers them to achieve success.
To that end, teachers have the power and responsibility to shape the future generations and it is therefore important to recognize and celebrate their contribution to the development of the nation.
The International Teachers’ Day has been celebrated internationally since 1994, while Rwanda started the celebration in 2002. This year Rwanda celebrated for the 18th time.
As celebrations were planned countrywide , at national level, the Honorable Minister of Education was the Guest of Honor in Kamonyi District, Southern Province.
At provincial level, celebrations were hosted as follows:
- Honorable Minister of State in charge of Primary and Secondary Education was in Rubavu, Western Province
- The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education was in Bugesera, Eastern Province
- The Director General, Education Policy and Planning / Ministry of Educationwas in Nyarugenge, Kigali City
- Director General, Rwanda Education Board was in Rulindo, Northern Province
At district level, Ministry of Education were represented by the teams which have been on the field for the last two weeks in Quality Education Enhancement Awareness Campaign.
During this year’s celebration, best performing primary and secondary teachers from sector, district, provincial and national level were awarded. The awards that were distributed to the best performing teachers country wide include: 21 Motorcycles, 868 Laptops, 9 Cows, 2 Flat screens, 12 Tablets, 60 Smart phones,2 Printers
