Six students who won the Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad 2021 get awards

Kigali, 04/06/2021: The Minister of State in Charge of Primary and Secondary Education   Gaspard TWAGIRAYEZU officiated the National Awards Ceremony for Team Rwanda to the Pan-African Mathematical Olympiad 2021 (PAMO 2021).

The Ceremony took place at AIMS Rwanda Centre, REMERA Campus where 6 students from 5 secondary schools were awarded after an excellent performance at PAMO 2021. Regardless their first participation in this highly ranked Mathematics competition, Team Rwanda demonstrated a marvelous performance winning 3 bronze medals and a team score of 61 which earned them the first place in East Africa and 7th in Africa.  

This was made possible by a commendable efforts of coaches, trainers, teachers and of course with the support of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Rwanda (AIMS Rwanda) and the University of Rwanda- Department of Mathematics.

The students who represented Rwanda at PAMO 2021 are: MUNEZERO Honorine from Lycée Notre Dame de Cîteaux; AKIMANA Nadine from ES Byimana ; ABAYO Joseph Desire from ES Byimana; MUGISHA Abdulkarim from RIVIERA ; MUNEZERO Jean Nepo from PS Ndera and UWASE Kelly from GS Saint André .

In his remarks, MoS TWAGIRAYEZU commended the winners and encouraged them to aim higher " We are here to celebrate you, but also encourage you to aim even higher".

Emphasizing on the fact that Mathematics is not only numbers, he addedWe all know that Mathematics is a tool to help individuals, organizations and society at large, to solve the most pressing issues in our communities".

Pan-African Mathematical Olympiad is the most prestigious mathematics competition on the continent, open to students in secondary school and increases participants' ability to problem-solve critical and creative thinking.
